Name the (possible) Copen Competition

Something’s just occurred to me. If I do go ahead and blow a ridiculous amount of money on a mid-life crisis car (and did I mention that Stubby is really into sports cars? No?), it’s going to need a name.

It can’t be the rARshMobile because the rARshMobile’s staying (for trips which require more than a folded newspaper of luggage) and rARshMobile II is just silly.

So, as Scaryduck would say, suggest-o.

The winner gets a ride next time I’m passing.

Brave New Labour

Tomorrow’s potential troublemakers can be identified even before they are born, Tony Blair has suggested.
Mr Blair said it was possible to spot the families whose circumstances made it likely their children would grow up to be a “menace to society”.

He said teenage mums and problem families could be forced to take help to head off difficulties.

He said the government had to intervene much earlier to prevent problems developing when children were older.

There could be sanctions for parents who refused to take advice, he said.

The PM has returned from his summer holiday to face intense speculation about his plans to step down.

What are the odds that Tony read Brave New World while he was on his holiday?

Ponder, ponder, ponder

The eBay auction still has a couple of days to go.

On the one hand it’s a limited edition Vivid (only 200 were made, apparently) and it could be mine for £6,200 (although that’s unlikely - I’d expect the winning bid to be over £7,000).

On the other hand, new models, albeit not red, are £2,000 off until the end of September, have the full manufacturer’s warranty and can be to my specification (albeit not with red paint). And it’s in Wigton, which is a sod of a place to get to from Aaalburgh.

Decisions, decisions.

The question is, which would piss off Grunt more? It has to be a new one, doesn’t it?

Aw, how quickly they grow up

Be thankful I’ve not had a camera to hand when they’ve been feeding. It’s not pretty.

Burning up

August 31st, 2006 | 2 Comments | Posted in Mundane musings

I was struck yesterday by a pain in my side. A nasty pain. One that seemed curiously familiar - if they’d not already removed my appendix many years ago I’d have sworn that it was back, in fact.

I came home early, then, went straight to bed and was asleep within minutes.

When I woke it was daylight and the clock told me it was half past six. Phew, I thought to myself, fifteen hours straight? That’s not a good sign. There was something troubling me, though, about the daylight although I couldn’t put my finger on what it was for a good 10 or 15 minutes. I powered up the lappie to check my mail. Nothing much had arrived (which in itself was not unusual). I still couldn’t put my finger on what was wrong with the light until I noticed the clock on the computer - 18:40. Ah. Only three hours then. I powered down and tucked myself up again.

Around ten o’clock I was woken by a text message but drifted off again after replying.

Awake again at two (still dark), the pain had subsided but I was running one hell of a fever, so I was soon asleep again. Until seven … then nine thirty. Bugger.

The pain does seem to have gone, thank goodness, but the fever’s still here. Very much so, in fact.

I’ll get up in a minute. I’ll just lie down for a second while …

It’s all my own fault (apparently)

An appointment today with Dr Quack to review the HappyPillsTM.

“How are you feeling?”

Well, that’s not easy to say, is it? I mean, is it me or is it the pills?

“Good point.”

We agreed a course of weaning myself off the HappyPillsTM over the next three weeks.

I don’t suppose there’s something you could give me that would help with these shaky hands?

I explained that although my hands had been superbly still when I was first taking the HappyPillsTM but that recently I’d noticed a degree of shakiness returning.

“Let me see.”

….

“Have you increased your caffeine intake recently?”

Ah.” Maybe I should cut down on my intake of double strong cappuchinos from the new orifice’s vending machine. With hindsight, four double cups a day is a little on the high side.

I kid you not

On TV last night there was an advert for (I think) some sort of carpet cleaning substance.

It closed with the line: “It’s Christmas, treat yourself.”

It’s Christmas?

In August?!

For goodness sakes.

As you can see below, the hairs are beginning to look like feathers (which must be a relief to both chicks and mother). I was relieved, when I went to check on them during an enthusiastic thunderstorm this afternoon, that Colleen was protecting Rupert and Murdoch (albeit by sitting on them to keep the rain off). Sweet.

I’m both happy and sad to report that Maurice has left. This is based on the fact that I’ve not seen him for a week.

Happy because it hopefully means that he’s now in a more appropriate location for moorhens. Sad because he’s no longer stalking around the extensive grounds at rARsh Manor.

I wonder what my next visitor will be. A golden eagle? An ostrich?
