Exodus 21:23-27

December 30th, 2006 Posted in Mundane musings

I am very unsettled by the news this morning that Saddam Hussein’s execution was rushed through first thing this morning.

I just don’t get the whole eye for an eye, tooth for a tooth punishment theory and I can’t see how this is going to make Iraq a more stable environment.

If anyone can explain how this is better than, for example, keeping him in prison for the rest of his natural life I’d be very interested to read this.

Well it means he isn’t a prisoner, to be broken out of gaol by his party (assuming they would want to - but then there are always some who will consider that his was the only way to govern Iraq), and he won’t provide gainful employment for X quantity of people for y quantity of years at z cost to his country, in order to to ensure that he would never again inflict his warped ideas of how the people who disagreed with them should be treated, upon millions of Iraqis and Kurds. He didn’t want to be hung, prefering to face a firing squad, as “that was the treatment for a common thief”- but having stolen the lives of so many over so long a period, that is exactly what he was

I’m still uneasy with the whole death penalty concept. I’d rather he were stuck in Guantanamo Bay for the rest of his life. And made to do work of some value (though god knows what), so something useful could be extracted from him. Don’t like the media coverage of the whole thing. It’s disgusting and sick.
