    I didn’t know that curate’s egg isn’t necessarily a well known expression any more.

    Croila, it comes from an old Punch cartoon, where the young and nervous curate was faced with a very dodgy boiled egg for breakfast and an intimidating landlady asking if there’s a problem. He replied, ingratiatingly, that it was “excellent, in parts.”
