Bayleaf II

June 22nd, 2007 | No Comments | Posted in Mundane musings

My second prospective gardener has been and will be calling back in an hour or so with his quote. Bayleaf no. 3’s made no attempt to call me back so if quote #2 is reasonable I’ll just choose between the two who have bothered to come and see the task ahead of them.

I’m not going to hold Bayleaf #2’s dress sense against him (I, after all, am in no position to do so) - let’s just say he has an “interesting” taste in shorts - but I was more impressed with Bayleaf #1’s explanations of what needs doing and why. We’ll see what the second quote is, though, before I appoint my next member of staff.

Bayleaves

I’m Bayleaf, I’m the gardener,
I work from early dawn.
You’ll find me sweeping up the leaves and
tidying the lawn

Ah yes - The Herbs. Happy times.

As you may have spotted me twittering earlier, I’ve bitten the bullet and have contacted a trio of local horticulturalists with a view to getting the grounds at rARsh Manor cleared/tidied up and then maintained in an ongoing mano a mano basis (or something like that).

The first of these popped around this evening to see just how overgrown the grounds are.

“Hmm. You’ve got ash trees in there. They’ll ‘ave t’be dug out.”

then

“Hmm. Popular trees too.”

Popular?

“No, poplar. Did those blackberries start ‘ere or next door?”

I’ve no idea. One minute they weren’t here, the next they were taking over. Like Triffids.

<blank stare>

Never mind.

“They’ll ‘ave to be dug out too.”

He is, at least, easier to understand than the chappie who (currently) mowes the lawns. There was an amusing point when he hesitatingly suggesting a figure for the clear up. He’d been laying the ground by warning me how big a job it would be:

“So you’ll be wanting us to come in, trim the hedges, clear the borders, dig out those saplings, dig out the brambles, …” I was expecting him to mumble: “… write the theme toon, sing the theme toon …”

Yes, that’s right.

“Well, that clearing’s going to cost a lot. Maybe as much as two … or even …”

Yes?

“Yes, two or two fifty.” 1

Oh, ok. Well, I’ve got a couple of chaps coming around tomorrow but thanks for that estimate. It’s very useful. I’ll give you a call.” I hope my glee didn’t show - that’s a damned sight less than I was expecting it to cost me, and this is from the largest of the three businesses (as far as I can tell).

“Rye choo arrrr then.”

So that was the good news. The bad news is that my glee at having a lesser spotted woodpecker in my garden may have been premature as the juvenile great spotted woodpecker looks more like a lesser spotted woodpecker than a great spotted woodpecker. Whoever decided that needs their head examining.

See for yourself:

The drawings are © the RSPB but the photo’s a PD image from WikiPedia. If I’m lucky I’ll get a photo of my visitor and hopefully we’ll get a positive ID one way or the other.

1 There’s an unspoken “hundred and” in the there, of course. “Two or two and a half” would have meant an unspoken “thousand” and would have also led to a vocalised: “Aye right. Thanks for your time but you can feck right off.” on my part.

On second thoughts

Do you remember this post where I was looking for help identifying an old photo?

It’s taken three months to verify things but I can confirm that the slide

not Tintagel

is NOT Tintagel.

Tintagel

Bollocks.

Any other suggestions?

[Update: Croila's put forward Dunottar Castle as the location and I think she's onto something there]

Tintagel Castle is, in fact, a bit of a disappointment - there’s so little of it remaining. It’s not the easiest location to reach, either - just look at those steps!

From Tintagel I headed south as far as Saint Agnes, looking for the definitive photo of Cornwall - a tin mine high on a rugged clifftop - at Wheal Coates. The photos are going to need a lot of work in PhotoShop, though. It seemed a lot brighter at the time and I’ve had to tweak these quite a lot to get them as “good” as this.

One more anniversary

Yes, it’s the latest If-it’s-June-it-must-be-someone’s-birthday day and today’s birthday girl is the lovely Croila. In recognition that I can’t use the “Have you got any Welsh in you?” chat up line1, she gets a special Welsh greeting:

Penblwydd Hapus,
Croila bach

1 Not that I would, of course. Ahem.

A Poem. By Lionel (aged 44 and a bit)

I read the book by Allen Carr. I studied his advice.
I’ve smoked my final cigarette - the feeling’s rather nice.
I want to live for years to come (it’s quite a selfish stance -
I’m doing it so I can spend young Grunt’s inheritance).

And it feels bloody marvellous too. It’s happening twenty eight years too late, of course, and may the Divine Entity of your choice help me if I put weight on, but I’m feeling very, very positive about it.

That is all. I won’t mention it again (for a while).

More kudos

I’m being very generous with my kudos at the moment, aren’t I? Never mind - they’re well deserved.

Today’s “Jolly good show, chaps” goes to those fine folk at Baader Planetarium for their Microstage 6030.

Just to remind you, here are the best results I got from holding my Canon 850 up to the eyepiece of the fieldscope, taken last weekend at Minsmere:

Rather nasty vignetting, eh?

We move on, then, to the rear garden of Chateau Pops. Pictured below are the resized view from my position just inside the kitchen door and a cropped, 1:1 snippet from that photo to show the nest box (top right) and the frying pan cum birdbath (bottom left).

Now let’s see how I got on with the camera being held in place by the MicroStage 6030.

Kudos

I’m most impressed by the support offered this week by Mio (manufacturers of my PDA/GPS).

It was only late on Tuesday that I handed the pre-addressed parcel in to the post office near Ganglion Square so I was pleasantly surprised to arrive home today to find that the PDA had been returned with a new motherboard and new base software installed.

What’s more, it can even find satellites again!

Jolly good show, chaps.

I’m still undecided as to my movements - it’ll depend on the forecast whether I head straight back to Norfolk or detour to take the Cornish photos which weren’t possible on the Grand Tour … or even go somewhere completely different instead. We’ll just have to wait and see.
