Calling all techies: Given that thunderstorms of a sufficient size are very likely to knock out my internet connection, which required the router to be switched off and then back on, how can I get this to happen automatically so that – for example – torrent downloads aren’t affected for too long?

Don’t think I understand your problem, my old fruity. I presume some automatic interpretation of the BBC Weather forecast, or transducers on the roof are out of the question. So, do you lose power in this scenario, and is there a problem with the router not restarting correctly?
Lionel: There’s no sign of a loss of power … hmmm … except … hmm … on second thoughts I think that perhaps there was a brief outage as my Sky+ box was on the “Welcome to Sky” channel. Yes, it could well be a case of the router not restarting correctly although my switching it off and then back on again does fix the problem. Curious.

If it involves a hard-reset of the router then no, I’m afraid you’re knackered. Well, other than investing in a UPS (Uninterruptible Power Supply ) box, which might help but depends on how long your power would be out for.
Other than that, *shrug*. My poxy little BT router restarts fine when we have power cuts, and restores and re-establishes the connection just fine.
Mind you, if you’re leaving a PC up to deal with the .torrents anyway, that won’t auto-restart post power-cut either, so you’d still have work to do…
Lionel: Fortunately it’s a laptop and so copes reasonably well with the interruptions. Although there’s nothing for it to do when the power comes back, of course.
